Chapter 5:   "Phase 2"
Date: One day later - Location: West Haven (Ralph's graduation party)

We all piled into the Brian's van and drove over to West Haven with an unsure feeling. We didn't really know what was going to happen. We all felt like we'd broken up with a really rotten girlfriend, and we all felt really good because of it.

So, we pulled into the rec hall, and set up. We played mostly Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins covers, cause Dave didn't know any of Brenda's lyrics. And besides... she said we couldn't use them. Brain dropped his big bass cabinet on his left toe, and was furious.

Date: July, 1997 - Location: Garage

Our first practice sans Brenda. It was like this emotional outpouring of music. We all felt like we could fuck around and we didn't have to answer to anyone. We just did what we wanted to.
So, Brian began to beat on his bass. We called that song "My Left Toe of Fury" in honor of his still furious left toe from the week before. We all wrote the lyrics then and there in the garage as the song was being created.
We asked Ralph to kick out a phat beat. We played some off-beat chords on top of that. We called that one "Shits and Giggles". Ralph wrote words to that some weeks later in the order of 'write lyrics that are pertinent to the song's title.
Jay, in his first venture into emotional songs in minor keys, showed the rest of us a little ditty he'd been working on called "Phase 2."

Date: Late July, 1997 - Location: Joestock (Joe Sastre's back yard)

Sharing the bill with other hot acts such as Canned Milk, The Fryalators, and the Cosbees, SiMent played thier first non-Brenda show. It was kinda dim. None of our songs were together. In fact, it would be safe to say they sucked.

Date: Mid-August, 1997 - Location: Hot Rocks Studios, New Haven

Jay hooked us up with some recording time, and we hauled Heidi's four track down there and made recording history. For three and a half solid hours, we wasted no time, and recorded everything new we had.

My Left Toe of Fury (4 takes)
Shits and Giggles (5 Takes)
Phase 2 (2 takes)
Solvent Alcohol - instrumental (1 Take)
Reef - instrumental (1 Take)
The Toothpaste/Toothgel Song (1 take)
Numerous covers (Weezer, of course, Pumpkins, Blur)
We took the first three above listed songs, and made about 20 or so copies of our second demo tape entitled simply "My Left Toe of Fury".  Diesel can still sing the whole song.  That day marked the last day of the summer of 1997 that SiMent would ever see each other again. Sounds bleak, I know.

Ralph, Dave and Jay would begin college the week after. Jay, heading for Eastern CT State, Ralph for WPI, and Dave for UNH.
