Chapter 6: The SiMent Renaissance

The school year of 1997-1998 showed much growth in all members. They all got tummies. They came home from breaks weighing numerous pounds more than they had mere weeks beforehand. They were getting slobby, and eating fattening food.

We practiced occasionally on Holiday breaks.  With the new year, an ending of a long relationship between Dave and his girlfriend inspired him to write songs like he'd never written before.

Date: March, 1998 - Location: UNH campus and Garage

Meeting a girl from Bolivia, and consequently falling for her yielded the song "Ali Toro". SiMent, minus Brian (cause we couldn't find him), recorded a demo of that song in the garage for Dave to give to Ali and try and win her. It worked.

Other such songs written in this period were "Anything For You", "Ride My Rump", and "Lying to Myself" with the last being forgotten for almost a year later. We learned a new song called "Green Green Goo," too.

Date: May, 1998 - Location: The Garage

Feeling both older and wiser, the three college freshmen came back to Milford. We got back into the Garage spirit again and started jamming on some new tunes.  Since they were left with virtually no songs excepting MLToF and S&G, thier goal was to write as many new songs as possible for the summer.

Date: June, 1998 - Location: Stacy Johnson's basement

We rented some microphones and a mixing board to record our new songs for a new tape entitled "Landscaping"

Songs Featured:
Anything For You, Ali Toro, Ride My Rump, Green Green Goo, and Lee Ann Rimes's "How Do I Live?"

Dave spent way too long mixing and mastering Landscaping that by the time it was finished, it sounded good, but nobody cared.

Stacy took some pictures of us that day. Hope you enjoy:

Date: Late June, 1998 - Location: Kevin McLaughlin's basement

Continuing the tradition of graduation parties, we kicked this one's ass. Opening for us was Ralph Thompson and the Q-Funk All-Stars. They played only two songs: A cover of The Rentals' "Friends of P", and a cover of SiMent's "Reef". Silly cover band. We played our new set chock full of new songs such as (the now defunct) "Not Enough" and yet more Weezer covers.

Then we ate pizza, thus contributing to our unhealthy eating habits.

Date: Some two weeks later - Location: Brian's back yard.

We were invited back as a second-time player at the Woodcock's backyard barbeque. We played much better this time around. Then we ate yet more unhealthy food.

NOTE: We're sure by now, by the pictures, you can see the transformation from skinnies to fatties. We'll let that rest now.

Date: Really Late June, 1998 - Location: Arch St., Greenwich

In between BLT and the Fryalator's sets, SiMent sans Jay jumped up on stage and ripped through that Lee Ann Rimes song. Or was it another stupid country singer who wrote that? Ahh who gives a fuck. (Dianne Warren does.. that's who)

Date: July, 1998 - Location: Kevin May's house

Reprising our third year playing Kevin's in the summer, SiMent once again set up on the stage (uhhh, deck), and showed thier new wares. They swam, too. They reminisced over the Brenda ordeal a whole year before. They took too many requests and ended up playing stuff noone in the band knew. Noteworthy covers: "Lowrider", NIN's "Closer".

Date: Mid-August, 1998 - Location: Stacy Johnson's Basement

The first and only show of it's kind -- A Triangle Show! A triangle show refers to: SiMent, The Fryalators, and BLT, a.k.a. Bermuda Love Triangle. Members of these aforementioned bands shared way too many members, and it gets rather confusing, so just deal. It was a fun show for all. The Fryalators even got naked! No, wait... everyone there got naked!

Date: Last week of August, 1998 - Location: Lazlo's Arts Cafe, Monroe

We trekked up to Worcester to gather Ralph and Brian Felouzis to bring them down to CT so Ralph could play in his band. We opened for a random noise band called "Erratic Tempo". Appropriate name. This was apparently the very first night of music at Laszlo's Arts Cafe.

We played even newer songs such as "Andrea" and "Everything". "Everything" put everyone to sleep, except Brian F. He seemed to enjoy it.  This marked our first public show with the current and final lineup of the band: Brian, Dave, Ralph and Jay.
