Chapter 7: The year that Ralph was a sophomore in college

Date: September 5, 1998 - Location: Alpha Chi Rho, Worcester, MA

We played too loud! We all made our way up to Ralpho's Frat and set up in a big empty room and played to people outside. It wasn't the best of our performances. It was, however, one of our loudest.

This, too, marked the first time Jay ever had any alcohol to drink. Jay's kind of a big guy, and it took a lot to get him buzzing. Ralph made Jello shots, and when Jay downed the first one, he was asking frantically, "When's it gonna hit?!?? When's it gonna hit?!?!?!?!" Good times.

We were invited to be on a compilation. Prelude records, a UNH student-run mock-record label, liked Landscaping so much, that they invited us to re-record "Ali Toro" and our new song "Andrea". In a long session lasting from 7pm-1am, we totally finished these two songs. The whole process was unfortunately rushed, and the final product shows it.

The release of the CD will never happen (is it a surprise?). Sorry. We'll re-record them. It's all good!

Date: November 13, 1998 - Location: Brian's Back Yard

We were told about an unsigned band competition being hosted by "The Late show with Conan O'Brien." We just had to enter. We set up in his back yard, and recorded Ali Toro thrice. They were all pretty horrible, but we sent Conan the video anyways. We haven't heard anything about it to date.

Date: Chirstmas break, 1998 - Location: The very COLD Garage

Freezing our nuts off, we tried out some new songs -- namely, "Look at Yourself". The practicing didn't last too long, cause our nuts began to hurt, and Dave got tired of that and split for the Caribbean for a week.

Date: Spring Break, 1999 - Location: Ralph's Basement

This practice heralded in the newfound home of SiMent's reign of noisemaking. No more cold. No more fridgerators. No more radial arm saws, or weight benches. No more drill bits, or sawdust. 100% more pool tables and neon beer lights. A couch was added to the lineup. Oooh! Comfy!

Just to be sure, the lineup consisted of: Brian, Dave, Jay, Ralph, and couch.

Unfortunately, the couch left the group due to artistic differences.

We still hang out, though.

The reason for this practice, was mainly to iron out our old songs, and nail down a couple new ones. We integrated a new song called "Lying to Myself", a rather old song for Dave. New for everyone else and the couch.

Date: March 27, 1999 - Location: Assumption College, Worcester, MA

Battle of the Bands! We picked numbers. Ralph picked a number out of the hat to decide playing order, and of course he picked the first slot. When nobody was there to watch. Almost all of Alpha Chi Rho showed, to support us, though. What kind guys. John Casill was the featured Beat Box during "Green Green Goo".

We played well. Very well. Probably, the best to date. However, we didn't play any better than a Grateful Dead cover band, a 311 cover band, a Psychic Water cover band, or a two-piece scream, guitar, and drum group. Innovative...

Date: Friday, April 16th, 1999 - Location: Larkin's Varsity Sports Bar

This show was rather uneventful, in that we played a mediocre set of songs for an audience of about 4 people. One of them, Dave's father. We were underage, and couldn't get any of our friends in to see us. Next, please.

Date: May 1, 1999 - Location: WPI Quad -- Indiefest 1999

Again, we trekked up to Worcester to play in an outdoor music festival. It was a beautiful day. Brian, unfortunatley could not make it there that day, due to a prior engagement in Boston, so we asked Kevin MacKenzie from the Fryalators to fill in on Bass. He learned everything in like a week, and played all but one song perfect. He really fucked that one song up, too. We're grateful we could have him fill in on such short notice, but, Kevin, don't expect another job. Oh yeah, he really is as mean as he looks in this picture. DO NOT FUCK WITH THIS GUY.

Technically, we opened for Liz Phair who played that night.

Date: Mid-May, 1999 - Location: Ralph's Basement

College finishes for the summer, and we ready ourselves for a hectic summer. We wrote new songs such as "PhD in Love", "I don't ask why", "I don't know".
